Early afternoon we journey 50 km out of town to Cu Chi to explore the amazing tunnel system built by Communist guerillas during the Vietnam War. Known as the “Iron Triangle” during the war of the 60’s, the story of Cu Chi is one of struggle, determination against all odds, and eventual victory. Late afternoon we return to town for the night.
After breakfast we journey to the prosperous town of My Tho in the heart of the Mekong Delta, a world that lives and works on the water. We’ll ride a local boat on the crisscrossing waters of the area to the Phoenix Island to see handicrafts and coconut candy workshops and exuberant orchards. Enjoy fresh fruits and live music by amateur artists and relax under a garden canopy. Next we take a horse cart to a farm to taste homemade honey-tea and proceed by boat through the small canals and side arms of the river to learn more about the daily life along the river banks. For lunch we’ll sample regional specialties such as Elephant Ear Fish, Hot Pot, etc… After a pleasant break we return to Saigon to catch an early evening flight to Hanoi, the capitol of Vietnam. Meeting and greeting upon arrival and transfer to the hotel in city centre.
We begin the full day tour of Hanoi with a visit to the memorial complex to Ho Chi Minh to know his amazing life. Continue to the Single Pillar Pagoda and the Temple of Literature to gain understanding of the two driving forces in Vietnamese culture Buddhism and Confucianism. Visit the Museum of Ethnology to see a large collection of artifacts about the cultures of the 54 ethnic groups and full size replicas of traditional buildings found across Vietnam. In the afternoon we enjoy a rickshaw ride through the lively Old Quarter, a series of 36 ancient streets where peddlers still trade the way they have done for centuries. We then walk to the water puppet theatre and enjoy a performance of the famed traditional art form created by village farmers around the Red River Delta region. Unique but recognized internationally.
Free time in the evening allows you to walk along the historic Old Quarter. This refined area of Hanoi provides a wonderful shopping experience and an array of excellent restaurants.
Today we journey east to Halong Bay, Vietnam’s greatest natural wonder. Arrival at around 12:00 PM we’ll board a nice junk and set sails to explore the incredible seascape honored as one of the seven new wonders of the world. Here many hundreds of limestone islands and islets and the emerald waters blend fabulously. Wonderful setting for relaxation! There are opportunities to visit a floating village and a cave filled with astonishing rock formations, to challenge kayaking and swimming. Enjoy and overnight stay on our luxury boat.
Wake up to fresh coffee before cruising back to the shore. En route the junk weaves through strange-shaped rock formations that invite comparisons from fighting cocks to dragons and even further!
